Jandaia Sopro de Alegria

2017

Jandaia Sopro de Alegria (2017) is a poetic critique of the state of total abandonment and destruction of the Cine Teatro Jandaia, located in the city of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. In the early decades of the 20th century, the Jandaia occupied a prominent place on the Brazilian cultural scene, being at the time one of the most beautiful, imposing and important concert halls in South America.

When I discovered the history and current state of the Cine Teatro Jandaia, between feelings of indignation and sadness, I felt the restlessness and need to create this short manifest film. To this end, even if only for a few moments, its stage revives its original pulse through the performance of an actress, a violinist and a dancer, organic and improvised performances created from the artists’ relationship with the space.

The Cine Teatro Jandaia is currently under the responsibility of the State Government of Bahia, which has promised for years to restore it and give it back to society, but so far nothing has been done.
