Christian Baes (Santa Vitória do Palmar, Brazil, 1988) is an artist and photographer based in Porto, Portugal. His practice uses photography as a starting point to explore the image, presence, vulnerability, and regimes of visibility in the city. 

In the project Behind the Rain, which he has been developing since 2017, he explores the relationship between image, perception, and the experience of contemporary blur through the rainy environment. Baes creates images that resemble paintings without abandoning the specificity of photography, exploring the instability of presence and the limits of the image’s legibility. The project has been presented in various exhibition contexts in Portugal and internationally. 

Initially self-taught, Baes earned a bachelor’s degree in Audiovisual Production and attended the master’s program in Photography at the Polytechnic Institute of Porto, developing a practice that combines long-term research, formal experimentation, and exhibition production.

His work has been presented in exhibitions and projects in various contexts, including the Cerveira International Art Biennial and international presentations of Behind the Rain.
