Bio & CV

Christian Baes (b. 1988, Santa Vitória do Palmar, Brazil) is a photographer based in Porto, Portugal, whose practice investigates perception, vulnerability, and presence within the contemporary urban landscape. Working at the intersection of photography, video, and installation, his research explores how accelerated rhythms of life, displacement, and emotional exposure shape the way we inhabit and perceive space.
Since 2017, Baes has been developing the long-term project Behind the Rain, a body of work that examines the city through rain, blur, transparency, and material interference as perceptual and metaphorical devices. Water, glass, reflections, and defocused vision operate as tools to question visibility, absence, and the fragility of human presence within hyperconnected environments. His images often move between figuration and dissolution, proposing a sensory experience that resists immediacy and fixed readings.
Baes works primarily with minimal post-production, privileging in-camera effects and direct engagement with environmental conditions, treating the photographic image as a threshold between what appears, what fades, and what insists on remaining.
